MUSEO MARITIMO
AIMS Museo Maritimo is a project envisioned and initiated by the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies or AIMS, under the keen supervision and efforts of its President, Dr. Arlene Abuid-Paderanga. On 23 March 2012, Museo Maritimo had its grand launch at the Philippine Trade and Training Center, the first maritime-themed museum in the country, that showcases its long and rich maritime history and how it has developed through centuries.
From Vision to Reality
A Collaborative Vision Comes to Life

Museo Maritimo was born from a collaboration between the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS) and the Hiniraya Cultural Heritage and Development Foundation, Inc. The project was initiated by Dr. Arlene Abuid-Paderanga, representing AIMS, and Gina Barte, representing Hiniraya. The official launch took place on March 23, 2012, at the Philippine Trade Training Center.

Opening Day: A Milestone for Maritime Heritage

The museum officially opened its doors to the public on October 11, 2012—a date that holds a special meaning. Dr. Abuid-Paderanga shared that the sequence of numbers, "10-11-12," made it a memorable and significant moment. On this important day, the public was welcomed by Dr. Mina Gabor, the former Secretary of the Department of Tourism, who graced the occasion with her presence. The event also marked the culmination of months of hard work, with key individuals like Gina Barte, Teresita Pagulayan of Hiniraya, and Dr. Ronel Gillesania of AIMS playing pivotal roles in bringing the museum to life.

The Foundation and Growth of Museo Maritimo

In its early years, Museo Maritimo was managed under the Office of the President – Special Projects Office, ensuring direct supervision of the museum's development. While the exact structure evolved, this foundation set the stage for a forward-thinking approach to maritime heritage preservation.

Among the earliest pioneers of the museum were Dr. Ronel Gillesania, who served as Executive Director, Angelo Bautista, a graphic artist, and dedicated staff members such as Ma. Luisa Confesor and Roselle Katherine Hipolito. The museum’s team gradually expanded, welcoming new members, Gregg Alfonso Gaces Abbang, Pat De Vera, Joel Japay, and Rizalyn Sanvictores. Our growing team was complemented by student assistants who contributed their time and efforts to special projects and museum activities.

The museum’s growth was also shaped by Hiniraya’s contributions, with key figures like Gina Barte, Teresita Pagulayan, April Sumaylo (Project Development Coordinator), and Rey Santiago (Archaeologist and Consultant) providing invaluable expertise and guidance.

A Vision for the Future of Philippine Maritime History

From its inception, Museo Maritimo was driven by a clear vision and mission to guide its path. The museum’s vision was to become “The North Star of Philippine Maritime History”, positioning itself as a leading institution dedicated to the study and preservation of maritime heritage. At the core of its mission is the commitment to honor the nation's maritime legacy, while serving as a dynamic platform for sharing and preserving maritime heritage information.

The museum's goals were also firmly rooted in elevating the status of seafaring as a respected and reputable profession in the modern world. Through education, outreach, and collaboration, Museo Maritimo sought to ensure that maritime history was not only understood but also appreciated by future generations.

As we look back at the beginnings of Museo Maritimo, we celebrate the passion, dedication, and vision that helped establish it as a cornerstone of Philippine maritime history. The journey may have begun in 2012, but it is just the start of a much greater story.
