A Pathway for Curators: AIMS Museo Maritimo Participates in MCAD's Curatorial Incubator

Program Poster from the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD)

AIMS Museo Maritimo, represented by Mr. Daryl Lorence Abarca, participated in the Curatorial Incubator organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) and the Arts Management program of De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde. The incubator, titled "Curatorial Conversations: Practices and Potentials," involved both emerging and established curators. Over five days, from July 8 to 12, 2024, participants engaged in intensive workshops, mentoring sessions, and discussions on the development and production of exhibitions. A central theme of the program was the review of proposed exhibitions by the participants. Most importantly, this program widens the pathway for aspiring curators to obtain the necessary formal training.

AIMS Museo Maritimo took the opportunity to present its initiative to build a temporary exhibit in the hallways of the Lighthouse Building and explore the potential of museums as an additional learning modality. The project, titled "The Philippines as a Maritime Nation-State and the Museum as a Learning Modality," is an ongoing initiative that aims to tell the story of the Filipino people through a maritime lens. Major areas of research, planned exhibition production, and proposed educational programs were discussed with mentors. During the discussion, it was emphasized that the role of museums is to inspire inquiry by asking questions rather than providing definitive answers. The main theme was the pedagogical function of museums, focusing on fostering critical thinking and introspection.

The insights from the program have enhanced the work plan and direction of AIMS Museo Maritimo. The rich discussions were made possible by the generous support and effort of the entire MCAD team, including Ms. Joselina Cruz, Ms. Mary Ann Pernia, Ms. Cheryl Marie Cumpio, and the Arts Management program of the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde headed by Mr. Alain Zedrick Camiling, along with the extensive support of Ms. Geraldine "Dindin" Araneta, the interns, and all the speakers and participants. AIMS Museo Maritimo would like to extend its gratitude to the organizers of the program, and we hope it continues to serve as an institutional initiative that cultivates curators and museum professionals. May the program continue to widen the pathway for aspiring curators in the country.
